On Purpose

Wanting to write more about human purpose (which is such a major theme of this blog that it’s part of its tagline) I realized that it might be helpful to explore the concept of purpose, to unpack it a bit. In doing this, I found that not only does it help clarify certain things but it also uncovers some interesting implications, some of which I’ll try to touch upon.  Dictionary.com defines purpose as “1. the reason for which something exists or is done, made, used, etc.; 2.an intended or desired result; end; aim; goal.” So, having a purpose that…

The Human as Trajectory

So far the process of human becoming is the movement from our first footsteps as homo sapiens into the world of today. This movement hasn’t been a slow and gradual linear process from our species birth. Rather, most of what is different in the human world has happened fairly recently in the human timespan. It is easy to see that there has been a process of acceleration of change in human existence. Life today is more changed from life in say 1700, than life in 1700 was from 2000 years before that.…

Creatures With A Future

So once we homo sapiens were spawned from the flow of evolution, we proved to be a different sort of creature, one with unusual capabilities, who did strange and new things. Starting from that simple life on the plains of Africa we went on to create the complex world of today. Thinking about the difference between our early lives and today’s world, we can see perhaps the biggest difference between us and the fellow creatures we share the earth with. Our lives as a species change over time, they move from past to future. Being a human…

Homo Sapiens Emerge

Go back some 200,000 years ago, when Homo Sapiens first appeared on the plains of Africa, having emerged from a procession of Hominins, starting with various Australopithicenes & then the different versions of Homo. If there was some independent observer present at that time, could they possibly have extrapolated from our ancestor to the global technical human civilization of today. Is there any way theu could have inferred how this ape derivative would impact the world? At that point in time, there would be no precedent in earth existence for a creature with the inherent potential of humans, no precedent for the unfolding…

New Models of the World Needed

Essentially, this is the raison d’etre for the Unfolding Human, its foundation stone.  Over the last 200 years, science has made tremendous advances in our ability to understand physical reality & biological processes. These advances also serve to illuminate our histories, the histories of human, life and cosmos. But we lag behind in updating our overall models of the world, our meta-models. By models of the world, I mean overall frameworks of thought that guide our goals and actions. Unfolding Human is something of an exploration, a sketchpad of ideas…

The Thought of the Unfolding Human

The starting point for this blog will be the thought of the Unfolding Human. Like most thoughts, it is a construction project built from many thoughts, with all the weak joints and patchwork fixes that implies. As a thought, it’s a perspective, a way of looking at the world. Its hoped for value is to open up fresh possibilities for human thought and action. The core thought of the Unfolding Human is to look at where humanity is now in terms of where we have come from to extrapolate where…
