Let Us Be Human Together

Share

We’ve reached a point in human unfolding where we need to envision ourselves as a common humanity. We humans need to move past the things that divide us and start learning how to live together. As long as we continue to allow ourselves to be circumscribed by nationality, ethnicity, religion and ideology, we will continue to perpetuate conflict in human existence. This will only serve to further violence and other human suffering and diminish our capacity for human fulfillment. The isms and ologys that we subscribe ourselves to are essentially constructs of the mind. As truths, as representations…

The Proper Treatment of Humans

Humans don’t always treat each other very well. A quick scan of the newspaper or flipping through cable channels is all it takes to remind us. In fact, we are capable of treating each other very badly. Our history is full up of all manner of atrocities and barbarities. At the most basic level, we are in either a positive or negative stance towards other humans. For each of us, this splits all of humanity into three broad sets, the positively aligned group, the negatively aligned group and the set of…

The Human Ideology

At this point in the developing of humanity, we humans need to give increased attention to our relationship with each other. I think we need to look closely at this inside out and upside down, from our relationship as fellow humans across the globe, to our relations within our nations, regions and communities, to the intimate worlds of our day-to-day relations with our family, friends and colleagues and even within to our relationship with that inner constellation of being we call our self. I think that a need to rethink these…

A World For Us All

If we are to follow the road towards a mutually beneficial world, as I suggested in my last post, Human Together, that means we need to envision the world as a space which exists for the fulfillment of all human beings. Collectively that would be the current total of all 7.19 billion of us. And I mean more than just a generalized collective fulfillment, a sort of diffused human pleasantness. But actually, the specific individual fulfillment of each of those billions of humans. That is to say that the world should be a world for…

Human Together

So, having arrived at this point in our humanity, can we humans learn to live together more harmoniously on this earth. Can we transcend the limitations of our current existence, the wars, the violence, the needless sufferings? Can we evolve our minds and our ways of being along with our science and knowledge? Clearly, it’s not the nature of humanity to accept things as they are. Our minds both enable and impel us to find better ways to do things. To move towards a more mutually beneficial way of being, we first have to open…

A Human Way

Upon being exposed to some particularly ghastly event, some particularly inhuman action, most people experience a form of horror, a combination of revulsion and shock. Emotionally, we find it disgusting and mentally, it is incomprehensible. Whether it is people chopping up their lifelong neighbors in Rwanda or someone holding women captive and abusing them for years in a house in Cleveland, these occurences are felt as alien to the ordinary lives of most people. The particular examples don’t matter, there is a seemingly endless supply of these occurences if one is attentive to them. And yet,…

Towards a World of Our Wishing

So, we find ourselves, in a world where our population, knowledge and capabilities continue to explode. But at the same time we continue to cause a lot of misery for each other; we struggle with the business of living together on this planet. This is true at all levels, from the inner psyche out to the global level and even to our relationship with the sphere of life. Yet none of us want to partake of any misery, we just wish to follow our bliss. But we find ourselves mired in this world which…

How Shall We Live?

In my last post, The Sorrows of the World, I covered some of the major areas of human-produced suffering that are part of our world. The point of this wasn’t to show what a horrible place the world is, or (like John Gray’s Straw Dogs) what loathsome, despicable creatures humans are. Rather, my intent was to make it clear that despite all of our human success, our biological flourishing, we, jointly as humanity, continue to produce a world that is full of phenomenon that we, as single human individuals, find undesirable,…

The State of the Human – Part 2: The Sorrows of the World

As I said in Part 1 of The State of the Human, looked at from a biological point of view, humans have had all of the success a species could dream of. From a big-picture, top-down point of view, we’ve multiplied, we’ve prospered, we’ve thrived. But looked at from an inside-the-human point of view, from the subjective perspective of humans living in this world, the picture is murkier, vaguer, the conclusions more obscure. In our ongoing scanning of the world, our efforts to see and know it, we becomes aware of a vast…

The State of the Human – Part 1: The Bright Side

My last 3 posts have been rather abstract explorations of the ideas of purpose generally and human purpose more specifically. Now I’d like to deal more directly with the idea of human purpose, of how we might wish to live as humans on this earth. Because a moving towards is also always a moving from one’s current coordinates, I think it’s useful to start by looking at how we humans live in the world today, to.review the current state of the human. Of course, it’s such a broad and deep topic that it’s somewhat ridiculous…

Look Forward Human

When you look at humanity as a trajectory, as a process of becoming, it alters your orientation to time. You see that we’ve moved from an existence much like our fellow primates, through a agrarian world of villages, into a series of empires, states, nations and world-systems into today’s proto-global-techno-civilization. In particular, the tremendous changes of the last century revealed the intensity of this impulse of unfolding. Humanity completed a shift from rural agriculutre through industrialization into the start of our wired post-modern information age. This movement was propelled by our explosively expanding field of knowledge,…

The Human as Trajectory

So far the process of human becoming is the movement from our first footsteps as homo sapiens into the world of today. This movement hasn’t been a slow and gradual linear process from our species birth. Rather, most of what is different in the human world has happened fairly recently in the human timespan. It is easy to see that there has been a process of acceleration of change in human existence. Life today is more changed from life in say 1700, than life in 1700 was from 2000 years before that.…
